The West Indian gherkin (Cucumis anguria) is an old cultivated species originating in Africa, which later spread to the Caribbean region and South America. Although often called a gherkin, it is botanically a different species from the common cucumber, but is grown and used in a similar way.

The plant develops long, winding stems with numerous fruits. They are oval in shape, about 4–6 cm long and covered with soft spines. The interior is light green to white, with a crunchy texture and a refreshing taste, resembling a combination of cucumber and zucchini with slightly sour notes.

The young fruits are picked before they are fully ripe and are particularly prized for making pickles and pickles. In Brazil and the Caribbean region, they are also used in various traditional dishes, soups and stews.

🌱 Sowing method

Sowing: April - May indoors or directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

Germination temperature: 20–25°C.
